Creating Cooler, More Comfortable Nursery Environments
CC Nurseries needed an effective cooling solution across its nursery settings after some buildings were reaching temperatures of up to 35°C during warmer weather.
With young children and staff using the spaces throughout the day, improving indoor comfort was the main priority. However, because the nurseries operate from early morning until evening, the installation work also needed to be carefully planned so normal opening hours and daily routines could continue without disruption.
At Atkins Air Conditioning, we worked closely with CC Nurseries’ senior team to develop a practical installation plan that delivered reliable climate control while allowing each nursery to continue operating as normal.
The Client Brief
During the summer months, some of the nursery buildings were becoming extremely warm, with indoor temperatures reaching as high as 35°C.
CC Nurseries wanted a reliable solution that would provide greater control over indoor temperatures and create a more comfortable environment for both the children and members of staff.
The key requirements were:
- effective cooling during warmer weather
- more consistent temperatures throughout the nursery buildings
- reliable systems suitable for regular use
- minimal disruption to children, staff and normal nursery routines
- installation work planned around the nurseries’ long opening hours
- a practical solution that could be implemented across multiple locations
Planning the Project With the CC Nurseries Team
Before installation work began, we held a number of Zoom meetings with senior members of the CC Nurseries team, including health and safety representatives, operations directors and nursery managers.
These discussions gave us the opportunity to understand the requirements of each setting and develop a detailed installation plan that took both the technical requirements and the day-to-day operation of the nurseries into account.
Working closely with the people responsible for managing the buildings meant we could consider:
- the areas most affected by high temperatures
- how individual nursery spaces were used
- the comfort needs of children and staff
- health and safety considerations
- suitable installation times
- how to complete the work without affecting normal opening hours
Out-of-Hours Air Conditioning Installation
One of the biggest considerations was how to complete the installations without interfering with the nursery day.
With the settings operating between 6:30am and 6pm, we developed an out-of-hours working schedule for our installation teams. This allowed the nursery buildings to remain fully operational during their normal opening times while our teams completed the necessary work outside those hours.
By planning the installation in this way, we were able to minimise disruption to:
- children attending the nurseries
- staff members
- daily routines and activities
- drop-off and collection times
- the normal operation of each setting
A Reliable Climate Control Solution
The new air conditioning systems were designed to give CC Nurseries much greater control over temperatures within the buildings.
Rather than nursery spaces becoming excessively warm during summer weather, the systems have been configured to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature of around 21°C, helping create a more consistent environment regardless of changing outdoor conditions.
For busy nursery settings, this provides an important benefit. Children and staff spend much of the working day inside the buildings, so maintaining a comfortable temperature can make the environment more pleasant and easier to use throughout warmer periods.
The Final Result
The installations were successfully completed across the nursery sites while allowing CC Nurseries to continue operating normally throughout the project.
The new systems now provide reliable temperature control across the buildings, with nursery spaces maintained at a much more comfortable level during warmer weather. Both children and members of staff have responded positively to the improved environment, and the client is extremely pleased with the outcome.
